Haupia (Hawaiian Coconut Pudding) Haupia is a Hawaiian dessert that is often referred to as "coconut pudding." The key ingredient in Haupia is coconut milk and it's pronounced as: "how-p-ahh." Haupia, chilled and ready to eat Haupia is a traditional Hawaiian dessert made from coconut milk. Although haupia is technically considered a pudding, its consistency is very similar to jelly and is more commonly served in blocks like jelly.

A favorite at Hawaiian luaus and potlucks, this basic recipe is easy and quick to make. Stir together the cornstarch, sugar, nutmeg, and salt. Bring the coconut milk to a simmer in a saucepan over medium-high heat. You can have Haupia using 5 ingredients and 5 steps. Here is how you cook it.

Ingredients of Haupia

  1. It’s 6 tbsp of cornstarch.
  2. You need 6 tbsp of sugar.
  3. You need 1 1/2 cups of milk.
  4. Prepare 1 can of coconut milk.
  5. It’s 1 tsp of vanilla extract.

Whisk in the sugar mixture, and cook until thickened, stirring constantly. When very thick, remove from heat,and stir in vanilla. Combine cornstarch, sugar, water, and coconut milk. Haupia (pronounced how-pee-ah) is a Hawaiian dessert (or snack) that is made from coconut milk and is traditionally served in little cut squares or as a custard/pudding.

Haupia instructions

  1. Combine sugar and cornstarch in a stainless steel saucepan. I don't recommend a nonstick saucepan unless you happen to have a rubber whisk because you'll scratch it up with all of this stirring..
  2. Whisk in the remaining ingredients over low heat..
  3. Keep whisking pretty regularly until the mixture begins to thicken. Once it starts to thicken, you'll need to whisk more often to keep it from burning..
  4. When the mixture is nice and thick (closest comparison I can think of is mayonnaise) pour it into a brownie tray or a cake pan..
  5. Let it cool for 10 minutes or so, then into the fridge to chill until serving..

It can also be used as an ingredient in dessert recipes such as pie, ice cream, hand pies, cake, fruit salad, malasadas…etc. Haupia is a sweet coconut cream custard that can be served as firm as jello or softer and more scoop-able like pudding. Commonly served at luaus and Hawaiian restaurants, this treat caught my eye and I couldn't resist making it along with our Huli Huli Chicken and Cilantro Lime Pineapple Rice. Haupia is a coconut milk base Hawaiian dessert. In this Haupia recipe, coconut milk is thickened with cornstarch to a pudding consistency and served in cups.
